Defense Department Report Concludes Hegseth Put Military Personnel in Jeopardy with Signal Conversation.

A long-awaited Department of Defense report has concluded that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth breached departmental policies by sharing secret information in a private Signal group, according to a source familiar with the report.

Details of the Event

The chat group in dispute included particulars about a scheduled air attack in Yemen targeting Houthi fighters. This discussion came to light after a journalist for the Atlantic was included as a participant.

Other officials in the group reportedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The investigation did not examine the conduct of Hegseth, as the other participants are not employed at the Pentagon.

Signal is a commercially offered communication application that was not authorized for handling classified information.

Potential Risk to Troops

The inspector general's report found that the information shared by Hegseth was classified and posed a risk to the lives of US troops if it had been intercepted by a hostile nation.

However, the report acknowledged that Hegseth had the ability to declassify the information he shared, though it was unclear whether he actually did so.

Hegseth's Response

The informed individual said that Hegseth declined an interview by the investigators. Instead, he provided a short written response.

In his response, Hegseth asserted he only shared details that would not have endangered personnel or compromised the mission. He further stated that he had the right to declassify material and considered the investigation to be partisan.

Next Steps

The finalized investigation has been shared with lawmakers. An publicly releasable copy is expected to be released in the coming days.
