RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, located using surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several entry passages leading to the depot... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - imposed militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation shows British leadership, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their valour," he said. "They were part of a great many UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate militants who threaten our security, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, after an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
